Stunning Victorian era period artwork!

This beautiful print of Jean-Leon Gerome's Chariot Race was hand-coloured by John Wilson Seno between 1860-1880. It is framed in an Greek Revival Frame (Eastlake) featuring black lacquer with elegant gold filigree. The filligree appears in the bottom left and right corners and in the center above and below the print. The print itself is double-matted with two layers of gold-colored matting. The inner matte features "Chariot Race" in an elegant Serif font centered below the print and "Jerome" in smaller text directly below the bottom right corner of the print.

Jean-Leon Gerome's was a French painter and sculptor in the style now known as Academicism. The range of his oeuvre included historical painting, Greek mythology, Orientalism, portraits and other subjects, bringing the Academic painting tradition to an artistic climax. He is considered one of the most important painters from this academic period, and in addition to being a painter, he was also a teacher with a long list of students. - Wikipedia
