This is a burden or pack basket crafted by the Akawaio people, also known as Acawai, from British Guiana (now Guyana). The Akawaio are an Indigenous group residing in Guyana, Brazil, and Venezuela, recognized for their traditional craftsmanship and cultural heritage.
This basket is made using a twill-plaited technique with vegetable fibers, a common method among Indigenous South American communities. The term "Warisha" refers to a traditional carrying basket used by various Indigenous groups in the region. Such baskets were essential for transporting goods like food, firewood, and personal belongings.

Condition:
The piece is in great condition for its age. There are minor imperfections in the wicker and the string appears to have become detached. Nonetheless, it's absolutely stunning. Please see photos for more details and don't forget to use the zoom feature!
